Prior to joining, I simply marketed This Time You Lose as best I could... posting it everywhere, telling everyone I had a book for sale, posting it everywhere, attending author book signings, and yes, posting it everywere.
In those first six months I sold a total of 180 books...about a book a day...and had received 14 decent reviews on Amazon. I thought that was pretty good. Then I learned about KDP Select.
With KDP Select I had the option sell more books by offering my book for free - for up to 5 days during a 90 day period of time. Sounds crazy, I know, but here's a super simplified version of how it works.
Every time someone downloads a book at Amazon, whether free or paid, the algorithms used by Amazon count it as a sale. (To be clear - no royalities are paid to the author for free downloads.) Sales increase a books ranking. Better ranked books move up the list, and get more exposure. More exposure often leads to more sales. Plus, those that read it may leave a review, which also increases a books ranking.
So.... I removed the digital version of This Time You Lose from all other book sale sites (Amazon requires exclusive rights for digital versions for the full 90 days. Authors may still sell print versions everywhere) and signed up for the 90 days.
I scheduled my free days, got the word out about them, and waited.
It's now been 6 weeks, and I have used 4 of my 5 free days. Here are the results. Note: the 'books sold' numbers only include PAID sales - NOT free downloads.
# OF REVIEWS
So there you have it. I sold over 4 times as many books, by simply giving it away. It cost me nothing but the time it took to set it up. I still have one more free day left, so the numbers will continue to go up.
When my 90 day run with KDP Select ends, I will most definitly re-enroll. How can I not?
