The first author to speak was Jean; she’s my neighbor and the one that set the whole thing up. Her book was a collection of poems or one page stories about tea – hence the tea party theme. Actually it was her deceased sister’s book, but Jean had a poem in it, so now she’s promoting it. She talked about a writing class she once took, and how she now teaches writing classes. She got sidetracked a bit and never even mentioned the book she was there to promote, but she did get the opportunity to slip a mention in at the end of the evening.
I was the next one to speak, and was incredibly nervous. I had my note cards with me so I could remember what I wanted to say, and to keep me on track. I also had my water bottle, because my mouth gets parched when I’m nervous. Now since I tend to “talk with my hands”, and I really didn’t want to knock the water bottle off the podium, I set it on the floor next to the podium. Then, as I took the rubber band off my note cards, it (the rubber band) somehow shot out into the audience – hitting a lady in the front row! I was mortified and apologized profusely as I moved around the podium to pick up the rubber band, and yup – you guessed it – I kicked my water bottle! The top came off and it rolled into the audience leaving a trail of water on the floor. Everyone giggled, I collected my water bottle, and managed to finish my little speach. So hey, other than all that....my talk went ok!
The third author, Julie, talked about her children's books and then it was time for questions. ALL the questions were for me, about my book, how I wrote it, etc. I felt a bit bad, and tried to deflect some of the questions to the other authors, but they continued to direct questions to me. And then at the end of the program, we had the opportunity to sell copies of our books if anybody wanted one. I sold 4 print books, and had 2 kindle sales. The other authors sold zero. I was a bit embarassed actually... and commented to the other authors that the people who bought my book probably just felt bad for me because of the way my presentation went. While I was glad to have sales, I really felt bad for the other authors. :/
Anyway, the whole thing was kinda fun, and I would do it again – minus the rubber band and water bottle mishap of course!
